Great changes ahead for Cedar Mill’s Donuts Plus

Old Donuts Plus Location
It has been a fixture of Cedar Mill for almost 21 years, but with the recent sale of the building located at 13500 N.W. Cornell Rd, Donuts Plus is due to relocate to what promises to be a bigger and better space. Whether picking up treats for the office, my little league team, or just giving in to guilty temptation I have been known to be caught with a little leftover confectioners’ sugar on my beard. Fellow indulgers don’t fret! The new location for Donuts Plus will be less than a mile away at Suite 100 of Oak Hills Village, near Pizzicato and McMenamins Oak Hills Brewpub
New Donuts Plus Location

According to Paul Kim, the son of the founders Joe and Sue Kim, leaving the Cedar Mill area was not even an option. “We wanted to stay close to our customers, who have been so loyal to us over the years”, he stated.

Regulars of Donuts Plus are in for a treat - pun intended. He referred to the need to move as a "blessing in disguise." Kim along with his parents will take this opportunity  “to look at everything with a fresh eye," including the kitchen, which will be three times the size of the old one , the configuration of the shop and the equipment they need. The menu is expected to stay mostly the same; however, they will add daily specials and other tasty enticements.

With the only negative feedback from customers being that the old space is bit stale and outdated, it seems in this case the changes ahead are all positive for Donuts Plus. No need to be held hostage by the Crispy Kremes and Safeways of the world. the new and improved Donuts Plus is expected to open before the New Year (just in time for any “healthy eating” resolutions must be enforced). Take my word for it; supporting a local business never tasted so good, and I am looking forward to continuing to get my fix as soon as they open up shop

Vacant Bally's Facility Makes Way for Orchard Supply Hardware and 100 New Jobs

California hardware chain, Orchard Supply will be moving into the now vacant Bally's Total Fitness off Barnes Road. The target date for the grand opening is set for mid-2013, and will employ about 100 people.

Orchard Supply began as a farmers’ cooperative in 1931 and offers merchandise needed for recurring home maintenance and improvement in categories such as hardware, paint, tools, nursery and garden. The average store is 44,000 square feet of enclosed space and 8,000 square feet of exterior nursery and garden space.

Headquartered in San JoseCalifornia, Orchard Supply Hardware has nearly 100 locations throughout the state of California. “We have wanted to bring Orchard to Oregon for a long time, and we’re thrilled to finally be entering the market,” stated Mark Baker, president and CEO.

My only concern is that the convenience that Orchard Supply brings to the area may give my wife inspiration for new home improvement projects...to be completed by me of course.

Cedar Mill - What's Behind the Name?

Thought this was an interesting tidbit, and had to share.

Seven miles west of Portland in what became Cedar Mill, plans for a sawmill were developed in 1855 by John Halsey Jones who was 23 years old. The Jones Cedar Mill cut Western Redcedars which were the dominant tree in the area. In 1892, the mill was abandoned due to a lack of timber. The holding pond near the intersection of 119th and Cornell Road was used as a community recreation area for nearly 50 years, where locals swam and fished. We now know this as Cedar Mill Creek. The mill became permanently identified with the community when the post office was officially designated as Cedar Mill in 1874. 30 years later, when the office was closed, the area continued to call itself Cedar Mill.

Cedar Mill Cider Festival – Say It Three Times Fast!

Come out and celebrate the delicious tastes of autumn at the Sixth Annual Cedar Mill Cider Festival.  Local Boy Scouts from troop 208 will demonstrating how the pioneers made cider with antique, hand cranked presses.  The 1,000 pounds of apples that will be used for the festival were generously donated by Dinihanians Farm Market allowing for free samples to all who attend. Cedar Mill Cider Festival will be held on Sunday, October 14 from 1-4 pm on the grounds of the John Quincy Adams Young House on Cornell Road just east of 119th, and in the adjacent parking lot of the Cedar Mill Bible Church.

In addition to tasting the delicious cider, bring your appetite because you will want to try one of the award-winning sandwiches provided by Burnt Ends BBQ and fresh apple crisp from Leedy Grange complete with vanilla ice cream! Seating will be plentiful for you to sit back and relax amongst your friends and Cedar Mill neighbors while you listen to the folk and bluegrass music of The Lauren Sheehan String Band.

If that’s not enough the Cedar Mill Cider Festival will be hosting local vendors offering local craves such as SweetRock Farms’ homemade bread, MeeMee’s jam, Laura Roberts aprons, and table décor from Fabric of Provence, and home-made candy from RhoJo’s creations. Dinihanian's Farm Market will also be on hand selling the freshly churned apple cider to take home, and just in time for Halloween, they have will have many pumpkins to adopt! The kiddos will flock to the spreading hickory tree for games and activities provided by The Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District’s Rec Mobile.

For those who are looking to learn a bit about the grounds and the historic house built in 1869, be sure to visit The History Tent. Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District who owns the house and grounds is the main sponsor of the event with a portion of the food and craft proceeds going to the restoration fund.  Donations are also welcomed by the Tualatin Hills foundation and the JQA Young House.  Looking forward to seeing our Cedar Mill neighbors at the Cider Festival!

New Park Linking Trillium Hollow to Arbor Vista

A new children's park in Cedar Mill will soon occupy the green space behind the new Arbor Vista, where Shadywood and Arborview meet. A fellow neighbor who spoke with a surveyor that was working behind their home discovered that there is a plan in place to create a North to South trail with a bridge connecting Trillium Hollow to the new development of Arbor Vista homes. Evidently, there were notices sent to the neighboring communities which we were unaware of, however the nearby property was always intended to link up to with Forest Heights.

Funds have already been allocated, and the county has given the go-ahead for construction to begin early next year. The addition will include removal of non-native species of foliage, such as blackberries and holly trees.

We will continue to post updates on the project as received. Any feedback or information related to the park is greatly appreciated.

Taste of Libertine

The Libertine is serving Beer and Wine now and pulled me in like a magnet. It had a fine selection of wine and beer, and small plates at a fair price.  They don't serve  the commercial crap wine served overpriced at other restaurants, but wines you may come across when touring a small winery.  The ambiance was simply stated, and if I were inclined to escape the insanity of my children for a moment, and watch a 2nd half of the Timbers game at a local strip mall cafe, this would be it.  It's not some over hyped sports bar where the crowd outside of smokers is larger than the one inside - I'm not trading one insanity for another.

It's also not your typical strip mall cafe crammed with video poker and other ways for them to take our money.  Are you a cafe?  A bar?  A pub?  The identity here is clear - local public house.  Tables were quaint, the owners are present, music was good, and they featured sports on the television in lieu of infomercials.  Even though this looks like a soccer mom's afternoon out, they do a fine job at enticing the soccer dads as well.

I always wonder about this particular corner of Saltzman and Barnes, just south of the Cedar Mill Library and the sleepy little strip mall we tend to scoot on by.  We ignore the Walgreens while we head for Target.  We fly by the TruValue Hardware on our way to Home Depot, and we skip past the little Napa Auto for the new AutoZone.  It's like a theme from the Disney movie CARS.  I've often wondered why this mall sits in yesteryear while so much progress is trying to take place around it.  Is it the proud local business owners such as the tailor and laundry mat?  Is it the large land lord that can't afford to make capital improvements, because the rents are low.  I assumed the latter.  It's not uncommon when the rents are low, no improvements are made.  If no improvements are made, the rents stay low, and these types of malls spiral into a dead mall as a result of losing the anchor tenant. It's cyclical and sad.

Through subtle interrogation, I discovered none of this was true. There is actually a plan in place for the whole mall to be knocked down and rebuilt in it's entirety.  Maybe there will be life after the dead mall.  Stores are going to get moved around, and get new facilities.  Maybe it will be street friendly, and pedestrian friendly. Perhaps, there will be courtyards full of life and fountains. Fingers crossed that the black-top parking lots will be replaced with patios for people watching.

I can't wait for PROGRESS!!!!

A Little Green to Keep Cedar Mill Beautified

Two Years ago, the Cedar Mill Business Association (CMBA) sponsored the first installation of the beautiful flower baskets along Cornell Road in downtown Cedar Mill. The popular program continued last year, and this spring the baskets are up. This year, the Cedar Mill Business Association is reaching out to it's residents for donations. The goal is to raise $2,000 to supplement money already  donated by local businesses.

Cedar Mill is a wonderful community, however the county doesn’t provide urban amenities to us. It is up to the residents, and business owners along with the CMBA to come up with the ideas, the energy to carry them out, and the funds to make it possible.

Thank you to all the businesses who have so far donated to our annual Flower Basket Community Fund!

Get Your Hands Dirty This Sunday for Sunset High School

The largest budget challenge in the history of Beaverton School District is upon us, yet our community and the quality of our children's education will prevail. As parents and members of the community, there is so much we can do to make the situation a little less bleak...and here's our chance:

Sunset is hosting it's first annual Day of Service this Sunday, May 6th from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The focus of the event will be to roll up our sleeves and make improvements to the school such as, landscaping, painting, demolition (my favorite part) and carpentry. No matter your skill level, there will be a way for you to contribute alongside 150 volunteers from Sunset Presbyterian Church and 100 other volunteers from various community organizations. As a bonus, the Sunset Booster Club has generously offered to provide a hot dog lunch for volunteers.

Please bring your rakes, gloves, tools and wheelbarrows and help to
set the tone for the upcoming school year.

Go Apollos!

Countdown to Fruits & Veggies Galore

Time to dust off the wagon and get ready to fill it at the Cedar Mill Farmers Market beginning Saturday, May 12th. A wide array of growers, as well as food and artisan vendors will be there to fill our bellies and the not-so-lazy days of summer. Early crops such as Asparagus, bulbs, garlic and salad greens will be there from the beginning, however June is the time to plan your feast around potatoes and berries.   Also, if you love a good harp solo don't forget to check out the music.

Tips for a great market experience:
  1. Shop early in the day to get your hands on the best selection
  2. Bring Cash
  3. Bring your own re-usable bag, basket or wagon to haul your loot
  4. Keep Fido on a leash
  5. If you don't have your child on a leash (lol), keep your eye on them
  6. Respect the vendors prices
  7. Have fun and try something new...such as kohlrabi?
The Market will be open 8:30 - 1:30 on Saturdays through October 27, 2012. See you there!

Jordan Woods Trail Plan
Our soggy spring has halted the project for now, but rest assured that once the mud is a thing of the past, construction will begin on the new Jordan Woods Trail. The park consists of 18 acres of wooded slopes surrounding Cedar Mill Creek. Those who live near the park may experience an increase in noise, dust, and construction vehicles until its completion next winter.

The $1.6 Million dollar project will consist of three trail heads including a parking area and a wetlands boardwalk crossing the stream. The end of the trail promises a view of the creek and surrounding woods, as well as a stone sitting wall for visitors to take it all in. The addition of interpretive signage will highlight the natural features of the park.

According to the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District natural resources staff, impacts to area wildlife, including beavers and pileated woodpeckers will be minimal.

The name of the park will be changed to reflect the district's effort to preserve natural areas, to Jordan Woods Natural Area.

For additional information on the project, visit http://www.thprd.org

Longest Run-on Sentence

I ran across an apartment review for Timber Creek Apartments in Cedar Mill and found, perhaps the longest Run-On sentence ever. Ignore the spelling errors and offensive ranting, and take a look at the punctuation. The writer enjoyed the usage of a comma here and there just to keep the rant going, but a period would have been nice?  I'm picturing this writer reading this rant in their head, and it sounds perfect to them... "Why would I need to stop for a breath?  That would just allow the other person to get a word in edgewise."

!!!!!! WE NO DON'T RENT THERE !!!!!!!
