Vacant Bally's Facility Makes Way for Orchard Supply Hardware and 100 New Jobs

California hardware chain, Orchard Supply will be moving into the now vacant Bally's Total Fitness off Barnes Road. The target date for the grand opening is set for mid-2013, and will employ about 100 people.

Orchard Supply began as a farmers’ cooperative in 1931 and offers merchandise needed for recurring home maintenance and improvement in categories such as hardware, paint, tools, nursery and garden. The average store is 44,000 square feet of enclosed space and 8,000 square feet of exterior nursery and garden space.

Headquartered in San JoseCalifornia, Orchard Supply Hardware has nearly 100 locations throughout the state of California. “We have wanted to bring Orchard to Oregon for a long time, and we’re thrilled to finally be entering the market,” stated Mark Baker, president and CEO.

My only concern is that the convenience that Orchard Supply brings to the area may give my wife inspiration for new home improvement projects...to be completed by me of course.

Cedar Mill - What's Behind the Name?

Thought this was an interesting tidbit, and had to share.

Seven miles west of Portland in what became Cedar Mill, plans for a sawmill were developed in 1855 by John Halsey Jones who was 23 years old. The Jones Cedar Mill cut Western Redcedars which were the dominant tree in the area. In 1892, the mill was abandoned due to a lack of timber. The holding pond near the intersection of 119th and Cornell Road was used as a community recreation area for nearly 50 years, where locals swam and fished. We now know this as Cedar Mill Creek. The mill became permanently identified with the community when the post office was officially designated as Cedar Mill in 1874. 30 years later, when the office was closed, the area continued to call itself Cedar Mill.
